Running LEGO Rock Raiders

Information on getting a standard copy of LRR to run (without OpenLRR). These instructions are a prerequisite for running OpenLRR.

Recent changes / differences from guides

Please note the following recommendations before reading any guides, as some things have changed. Please also refer to this section for changes since the last time you read this page.

2022-10-04

  • Use dgVoodoo v2.79.3 - download - This version fixes a major bug where the graphics would freeze while the game continued to run underneath (see Issue #29).
  • Check Run this program in compatibility mode - This may help if you're experiencing issues with movie playback.
  • The LRR Masterpiece Edition Executable does not fully support Asian/multi-byte character languages. Other languages may also not be supported, but it's not known which ones.

Many guides and walkthroughs already exist to explain the process of setting up LEGO Rock Raiders, so it's recommended to rely on these. The rest of this page lists the basic steps involved, and a files checklist to make sure everything is in place.

Outline of steps

Setup

  1. Installation

    1. CD and CD Drive, or ISO file (see required files)
    2. (Optional) Alternate Installer - download
    3. (Recommended) Move install folder out of Program Files
    4. (Recommended) Backup install folder

  2. Get Executable

    • (Recommended) LRR Masterpiece Edition Executable - download
    • (Not Recommended) SafeDisc DRM Drivers - guide, download
    • Skip the drivers step if LegoRR.icd is 0 KB in size (no DRM), or if you're using the LRR Masterpiece Edition Executable.

  4. DirectDraw lag fix

  5. Run without CD

    1. Copy AVI files from <CD>/Data/AVI/ to <install>/Data/AVI/ -or- download avi
    2. Copy WAV files from <CD>/Data/Sounds/Streamed/ to <install>/Data/Sounds/Streamed/ -or- download sounds
    3. (Optional) Music without CD Fix - guide, download

Running

  1. Compatibility

    1. Right click Properties on the game executable (LegoRR.exe, LegoRRCE.exe, OpenLRR.exe, or OpenLRR-d.exe).
    2. Go to the Compatibility tab.
    3. Check Reduced color mode. Select 16-bit color from the dropdown.
    4. (Optional) Check Run this program as an administrator.
    5. (Optional) Check Run this program in compatibility mode. Select Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the dropdown. (Needed if you're experiencing issues with movie playback.)
    6. Press Apply and close.
    7. Re-apply whenever the exe (or folder) is moved or renamed.
    8. (Windows ≤7) See this Guide for steps on Windows 7 and below.

  2. dgVoodoo settings (if using dgVoodoo)

    1. Run the executable dgVoodooCpl.exe.
    2. Select the .\ button in the top-right corner.
    3. Go to the DirectX tab.
    4. Uncheck dgVoodoo Watermark.
    5. Press Apply and close.

  3. Running

    1. Run the executable (LegoRR.exe, LegoRRCE.exe, OpenLRR.exe, or OpenLRR-d.exe), rather than the shortcuts created on the Desktop.
