This avoids the default behavior where one UI update has a throughput rate, and the next UI update just shows --
, back and forth.
Seemingly, the chosen interval should flow through all the way to the GraphQL subscriptions and emit them on that interval, but somewhere along the line, the logic breaksdown and it ends up spitting out zeroes for the throughput values, and in turn, the --
value.
We could/should fix that, I suppose, but also: it's not clear at all why we'd bother allowing lower than a 1000ms interval since it just makes the math around calculating those per-second throughputs a bit wonky.

This just makes sense, I think.
The throughput rates already indicate change so you really don't need to see that you've gone from 7,267,133 events to 7,267,134 to understand events are flowing, etc.

This boils down to showing the time the connection was established, for if users want to take the total events/bytes values and divide them by how long top
has been watching, etc.

🎉 Thanks! This has been a long time coming. I think it could be worth calling this out in the upgrade guide given the scope of the changes (specifically the internal metrics being dropped; the GraphQL API is still pretty experimental / undocumented). Otherwise this looks great. I pulled it down and played around with a config to ensure everything looked as expected.

This is out-of-scope of this PR, but in #17322 we are standardizing on the component estimated JSON byte size for received/sent event bytes. We can make that update later since this preserves the current behavior.

That's fair.
IMO, showing the event bytes in, or event bytes out, for a source or sink, respectively, wouldn't make sense: the numbers can be vastly different in many cases, and, well, people generally expect the network bytes, or bytes that relate to the data actually coming into/going out of Vector. Obviously, for the bytes out of a source, bytes into a sink, or bytes into/out of a transform, it has to be the event bytes: that's all we have.
The top
UI is slightly cluttered as-is, but it might be nice/useful to think about somehow demarcating which bytes value we're using in the respective column, so that all components can show a value, but it's clear that, oh, OK, yeah, I'm getting 10MB/s in over the wire to my source, and sending out 5MB/s, and events bytes for the remainder just to fill things out.
Regression Detector ResultsRun ID: 94141464-759a-460b-a51c-c639c89b6bde ExplanationA regression test is an integrated performance test for Because a target's optimization goal performance in each experiment will vary somewhat each time it is run, we can only estimate mean differences in optimization goal relative to the baseline target. We express these differences as a percentage change relative to the baseline target, denoted "Δ mean %". These estimates are made to a precision that balances accuracy and cost control. We represent this precision as a 90.00% confidence interval denoted "Δ mean % CI": there is a 90.00% chance that the true value of "Δ mean %" is in that interval. We decide whether a change in performance is a "regression" -- a change worth investigating further -- if both of the following two criteria are true:
The table below, if present, lists those experiments that have experienced a statistically significant change in mean optimization goal performance between baseline and comparison SHAs with 90.00% confidence OR have been detected as newly erratic. Negative values of "Δ mean %" mean that baseline is faster, whereas positive values of "Δ mean %" mean that comparison is faster. Results that do not exhibit more than a ±5.00% change in their mean optimization goal are discarded. An experiment is erratic if its coefficient of variation is greater than 0.1. The abbreviated table will be omitted if no interesting change is observed. No interesting changes in experiment optimization goals with confidence ≥ 90.00% and |Δ mean %| ≥ 5.00%. Fine details of change detection per experiment.

This is a follow-up PR to #17516, which does a few things: - completely removes `processing_errors_total`, `events_failed_total`, and `events_discarded_total`, with one exception (see reviewer notes) - adds a 0.31 upgrade guide which covers the removal of these metrics and the metrics removed in #17516 - updates the Cue files for all components to derive their Component Specification-related metrics descriptions at the component type level (see reviewer notes) ## Reviewer Notes ### One dangling reference to `events_discarded_total` There's still one dangling reference to this deprecated metric for the `throttle` transform. I left a TODO comment in the code, but essentially, it currently specifies a tag (which bucket key was throttled) for `events_discarded_total` which can't be translated directly to `component_discarded_events_total` as the specification disallows custom tags. We'll probably need to quickly talk about whether the specification is too rigid or if we actually want to emit that tag at all. ### Updated Cue files for common component metrics I followed the Component Specification here, since technically all components receive and send events, and can drop or discard those events. This touched a vast majority of the component Cue files, and should bring them up to a far more consistent state than the previous set of circumstances. There's definitely something to be said for even pushing up the abstraction of how components inherit that `telemetry: metrics { ... }` stuff so it's driven by component type rather than hard-coded in the per-component-type Cue file (`sources.cue`, etc)... but this felt like a reasonable middle ground to leave it at for now.

Context
This PR is primarily, and simply, focused on one thing: removing now deprecated internal metrics. Specifically:
events_in_total
events_out_total
processed_bytes_total
processed_events_total
These metrics have been deprecated for a while, replaced by the metrics defined in the Component Specification. For example,
component_sent_events_total
replacedevents_out_total
, andprocessed_bytes_total
is replaced bycomponent_sent_bytes_total
/component_received_bytes_total
: no more having to remember what direction the metric refers to based on what type of component is emitting it.Solution
The change to simply stop emitting these deprecated metrics is straightforward, but most of the work in this PR centered around updating the GraphQL API, and subsequently
vector top
, to switch from theprocessed_*
metrics to theircomponent_*
counterparts. While in the area, I adjusted some of the
vector top
output to display separated bytes in/bytes out, similar to the existing events in/events out split. This also involved a small amount of work to adjust the layout constraints, and so on, to accommodate for that.Additionally, many updates were made to the component Cue files to remove references to these now-removed metrics.
Reviewer Notes
Dichotomy between
processed_bytes_total
and thecomponent
-prefixed replacementsPrior to this PR, we were backfilling
processed_bytes_total
in the following way:component_received_bytes_total
toprocessed_bytes_total
component_sent_bytes_total
toprocessed_bytes_total
As such, we never emitted this metric for transforms, and
processed_bytes_total
was an analogue for network bytes. A lot of the work has tried to reflect that, such as in the GraphQL API, where spots that hadprocessed_bytes
are now replaced with the component type-relevant value, being eitherreceived_bytes
orsent_bytes
.Closes #9314.
Closes #7346.
