Think Aloud Protocol

Introduction

As an observer, we need to make sure of the following:

• That users realise that only the interface, but not them, are under scrutiny.
• That users should at all times comment verbally on his/her actions, intentions and thoughts.
• Besides giving instructions for users to execute, we also need to explain the basic features and design of the app and provide necessary help when needed

Methodology:

Note taking

• The main task of the observer is to jot down what happens.
• The moment when an observer notes what a subject is doing/saying only occurs once and thus needs to be recorded.
• Note taking is still relevant even when recording the experiment as the audio representation cannot capture everything and there is no way of clarifying ambiguities when using audio records.

Use of audio data capture recording equipment

We will seek approval from our user to record audio during think aloud process. If the user does not want to record his/her voice, we will note down their words during think aloud process.

• Useful because session can be recorded for later analysis
• With the observers usual position beside the participant they may miss something

Analysis of limitations in feedback

UI

Base on the feedback from think aloud session, we find out that there is still room to improve for the UI. Most of the users reflected that the design of our UI is a bit simple or plain, which can be better designed. On the other hand, due to the limited testing devices we have, it is hard for us to ensure that users have the same experience with devices that differs in screen size, OS version or default font/font-size. We will try to improve the UI based on the feedback, and ensure that user experience will not be affected by the difference among devices.

Features

There is also a noticeable amount of feedback requesting for more features relating to movies.

• Many users mentioned that a movie ticket booking feature shall be integrated for better experience. What we may do in the future can be simply providing the booking URL to users, or even cooperating with cinema companies to have a build-in booking system. This will definitely be the next step we are aiming for.
• Navigation to the cinema feature is also a common voice. This can be done by directing the cinema information into Google Map app.
• Some users also wish to watch movie trailers in the app. We will try to evaluate the resource usage of this feature before we decide whether to implement this feature.
