BOINC on Android testing (DEPRECATED)

There are two levels of testing for BOINC on Android:

  • alpha (early-stage development versions)
  • beta (finished versions being tested for public release)

Each level has a corresponding Google group. If you join the group, you'll automatically get that version when you install BOINC for Android. If no version is being tested, you'll get the production version.

Alpha Testing

  1. Join this group (https://groups.google.com/forum/#forum/boinc-android-alpha) using the email address associated with your Google play account. This is an invitation-only; contact Rom Walton.
  2. Sign in with your Google account: https://accounts.google.com/Login?service=profiles
  3. Accept the invitation to become a alpha tester: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/edu.berkeley.boinc
  4. Download BOINC from the PlayStore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.berkeley.boinc

If the links at 3. or 4. return a 404, it might be because you are not signed in with your Google Account.

Beta Testing

Anyone can join this group.

  1. Please join this group (https://groups.google.com/forum/#forum/boinc-android-testing) using the email address associated with your Google play account.
  2. Sign in with your Google account: https://accounts.google.com/Login?service=profiles
  3. Accept the invitation to become a beta tester: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/edu.berkeley.boinc
  4. Download BOINC from the PlayStore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.berkeley.boinc
  5. You can report bugs (or make other comments) by emailing (boinc-android-testing@googlegroups.com).

If the links at 3. or 4. return a 404, it might be because you are not signed in with your Google Account.

Systematic testing

We do systematic testing of BOINC (for all platforms, not just Android) using volunteers, with test results reported via a web interface at https://boinc.berkeley.edu/alpha/. You'll need an account on the BOINC Alpha Test site to do this; contact Rom Walton or David Anderson for this.

Note: the "Alpha" is a misnomer; this system is used for testing of release candidates, in particular the Beta version of the Android client.

Current test coverage can be viewed here: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/alpha/test_summary.php
