The engineering of a space station requires the use of a new physics without gravity. Forces are no longer pulling towards an imaginary "downward", but must meet other forces as per Newton's third law.

Space station concepts have been diverse: from spherical to the linear. From rotating to stationary. The need for gravity may be a factor of using the gods, rather than any imaginary physics from the a priori.

Epic designs make use of scale and highly-architected gauges for being aware of everything. Use of color, signage, mechanical signals and mating systems, electronic signals and mating systems -- these all offer powerful organizing forces for complex designs.

Star Wars death star offers a lot of design ideas, for example. Locks and electronic interfaces which provide information to the aware user, while shielding it from the unaware. Differing depths of knowledge and differing levels of access.
