Welcome to the Book of Thoth Wiki!

The Book of Thoth is a 2D puzzle game set in Ancient Egypt. Unlock new hieroglyphs as you progress, and write spells with the words you know to defeat enemies and solve challenging puzzles. Enter a world where your power is limited only by your linguistic ingenuity.

The central mechanic in the Book of Thoth is the ability to create customizable spells written in the language of Ancient Egypt. With a wide vocabulary and complex grammar at your disposal, enchant weapons and spells which will make you into an unstoppable force.

General Overview

A 2D level-based game a la Binding of Isaac. The distinctive thing about this game is that items can be enchanted with "spells" in a hieroglyphic-like language. For example, you can attach a custom spell to an arrow to change what happens when it impacts an enemy. Levels should be designed so that the player must use spells not just to kill enemies, but also to solve puzzle or pass other obstacles.

Progression

The goal of the game is to beat levels. Players find various items and "vocabulary elements" along to the way to upgrade their character and spellcasting abilities. Certain words like prepositions with abstract semantics are given to the player at specific times, but MOST items and specialized vocabulary words are found randomly. Once a vocabulary element is unlocked, players can use it to write spells in any way they want.

To enhance replay-ability, there should be a large amount of spells that must be unlocked by performing certain feats within the game. All of the spells and floors are randomized throughout the game, which will make each play-through a completely new experience than the others.

Levels

Floors will follow a set of basic guidelines, but will overall be randomly generated. These sections should create puzzle-game like gameplay where the player must use spells to get past obstacles and enemies. The exact balance of RNG and static content will be up to level designers, and should include various different interactive objects to progress and develop as the game goes on.
