Scope of the WG

The scope of this WG covers safety assurance in the context of...

This WG will collaborate with other WGs to enable safety assured vehicles. In particular, the WG will collaborate with Open AD Kit WG, API WG, and Software WG much more closely.

Working group goals

The Safety Assurance WG goals are as follows:

Short-Term Goals (current ongoing work)

  • Align with all team members on top of mind and how they can contribute
  • Start engaging with WMG / Safety Pool Database for Autoware CICD pipeline
  • Agree on roadmap to achieve long term goals
  • Work with at least one commercial partner
  • Hold an annual research workshop around Safety of ADAS/AV systems

Long-Term Goals (next 1-2 years)

  • Establish a framework for quantifying and evaluating the safety of autonomous systems in a transparent manner
  • Impact the standardization of safety across the globe (such as ISO NWIP8800)
  • Enable apples to apples comparison of safety metrics across different systems
  • Work towards a framework to have universal safety metrics that can apply across ODDs while also allowing for ODD specific customizations.
  • Work with at least 3 commercial partners on an ongoing basis

Future Work

  • Evaluate different strategies for a safety monitoring system
  • Evaluate state of the art

  • Compare safety assurance implications for
  • LLM/Transformer based AV stacks

  • End to end AV stacks like Tesla FSD 12.x, Wayve & Waabi

  • Traditional AV stacks like Waymo, Cruise, Zoox

How to participate in the working group

Weekly meeting information

The Safety Assurance working group meets bi-weekly at 07:00 Am PST (subject to change) every other Tuesday. To join, please fill the sign up form here.

For meeting information, see the the Autoware Foundation's events calendar for when the upcoming meetings will be held. If you use Google Calendar, you can subscribe to this calendar directly to have it displayed alongside your own calendar events. To do this, click the "+ Google Calendar" link in the bottom right corner of that site. Note that this will not add the events to your own calendar, meaning you may not receive notifications about meetings starting soon. For those not using Google Calendar, you can add the calendar to your own by downloading it as an ICS file and importing that into your calendar software.
