Setting up Darkest Hour is similar to most PC game setups. From the main menu, select Settings, the settings are categorized into Game, Display, Audio, Controls, Input, and Hud. This page will guide you on the settings, settings that are bold are recommended for you to change or confirm.
- Player Name: This is the name you and other players will see.
- Gore Level: Gibs and blood level (recommended and default is Full Gore).
- Purge Cache: How often your download cache of custom content is removed (recommended and default is never).
- Connection: Your network rate (default is Cable/ADSL 10000)
- Dynamic Netspeed: Will automatically adjust rate if ping is high (default is checked)
- Incremental Tank Throttle: Has a throttle for system for armored tanks (try both and decided at your preference).
- Incremental Vehicle Throttle: Has a throttle system for soft vehicles (recommended to leave unchecked).
- Manual Tank Shell Reloading: Allows you to choose which type of round to load before you load (recommended to check).
- Render Device: Recommended is Direct 3D 9.0 (linux & mac users will likely be forced to use OpenGL).
- Resolution: Recommended is your desktop resolution.
- Game details: Recommended is Highest if your system can handle it.
- Show Advanced Options: Recommended is checked (same thing that selecting Custom under game details allows).
- Full Screen: Recommended is your preference (those who minimize from game should not use full screen).
- Brightness: Recommended is default (0.8)
- Gamma: Recommended is default (0.8)
- Contrast: Recommended is default (0.7)
- Texture Detail: Changes how much world detail will be rendered (turn this down if you get lots of create texture crashes).
- Character Detail: Changes how much character detail will be rendered.
- World Detail: Changes the level of detail used for optional geometry and effects.
- Physics Detail: Changes the physics simulation level of detail.
- Dynamic Mesh LOD: This has no or little effect.
- Decal Stay: Changes how long weapon scarring effects stay around (bullet hits, grenade marks, etc).
- Antialiasing: Adjust the detail of multisampling for antialiasing. 'None' recommended for low-performance PC's
- Anisotropic Filtering: Adjust the level of anisotropic filtering. 'None' recommended for low-performance PC's
- Force FSAA Screenshots: Forces screenshots to work in fullscreen if driver AA is implemented and not game AA.
- Character Shadows: Adjust the detail of character shadows. 'Blob' or 'None' recommended for low-performance PC's
- Motion Blur: Recommended to check if able (does not work with OpenGL)
- HDR Bloom: Recommended to uncheck (uncheck because some custom levels will have extreme bloom values)
- Decals: Enables weapon scarring effects (highly recommended to have checked).
- Dynamic Lighting: Recommended to check.
- Detail Textures: Recommended to check if your system can handle it.
- Coronas: Show light coronas (recommended to check).
- Trilinear Filtering: Enables trilinear filtering, recommended for high-performance PCs.
- Projectors: Highly recommended to check.
- Foliage: Has little effect as most foliage is forced on.
- Weather Effects: Enable weather effects like rain-drops, snow, and lightning (recommended to check).
