usecase-33 : "Package per version storage"
- There was a discussion amongst National Library of Norway and Univ. of Basel. There is a summary of the recommendations for changes to the spec, including the questions that they weighed to get to the recommendations.
- They also have three proposals for how to change the
inventory.json
file, the proposals are based on their impact to theinventory.json
file: low (a sidecar file for each zip), medium (add an inventory-unpacked.json file), and high (adds a new block to the inventory). We walked through these documents with the authors to better understand the recommendations and the proposal. - For those that worked on the recommendations and proposals, they are more interested in having fewer small files, it's not really about compression.
- Feel free to add to the comments associated with the use case or the and the workgroup notes. Also a suggestion to work through the thoughts not just via markdown, but also via the code that is being written.
- Notes from the chat discussion:
- Oasis description of the ZIP-basis of the OpenDocument Format: https://docs.oasis-open.org/office/OpenDocument/v1.3/cs01/part2-packages/OpenDocument-v1.3-cs01-part2-packages.html#a_Appendix_C___Zip_File_Structure__Non_normative_ (Jurgen)
- ZIP Archives can also be created without any compression and it simplfies life if we only support uncompressed packages. (Thomas B. and Neil)
- The "low impact" proposal matches well with how minio handles things: https://blog.min.io/small-file-archives/ (Seth)
- I know of many Fedora users who would .love to reduce the number of files within OCFL and this is an obvious solution (Dan Field)
